Is My Dog Vomiting an Emergency?
Vomiting in dogs is common — but sometimes it’s a sign of something serious.
As emergency veterinarians, one of the most frequent questions we hear is:
“Should I take my dog to the ER for vomiting?”
The answer depends on a few important factors.
When Vomiting IS an Emergency
You should seek emergency care immediately if your dog:
Is vomiting repeatedly (more than 3–4 times in a few hours)
Cannot keep water down
Is lethargic or weak
Has pale gums
Has a distended or painful abdomen
Is trying to vomit but nothing comes up (possible bloat)
Is a puppy or very small dog
May have ingested something toxic
Is vomiting blood
These situations require urgent evaluation.
When You May Be Able to Monitor at Home
If your dog:
Vomited once or twice
Is still bright and alert
Is drinking small amounts of water
Has no abdominal pain
Is acting otherwise normal
You may be able to monitor closely at home.
However, if symptoms continue or worsen, emergency evaluation is recommended.
Special Situations
Certain breeds, puppies, and dogs with underlying medical conditions (like diabetes or kidney disease) can deteriorate quickly.
